Newborns are most interested in things that have motion or that make noise. Many parents find they can engage their baby by simply shaking a set of keys or playing with a baby rattle. Reading, singing and playing select music are also excellent ways to engage baby learning with the new world around them. As they get older, specifically between the ages of 4 and 6 months, babies become more interested in toys they can touch. Studies show that during this time babies enjoy looking at bright colors and manipulating toys such as blocks and shapes that appear to go together. Between the ages of six and eighteen months is the time where more complicated toys should be introduced. While this playing activity is occurring, it’s recommended that the baby also be stimulated simultaneously with singing and music. This is also the ideal time to start naming objects for them so that their language skills begin to associate the objects with what it is they are attempting to do.

Remember, baby learning is optimum with the proper environment. Take plenty of time to read together, listen to music together and encourage conversation as often as possible. Encouraging them to talk and ask questions often is key to developing motor skills and imagination. Your baby may also find it amusing at the sight of their bowl of spaghetti hitting the floor, and even more entertaining watching you clean it up! Its important at these moments to remain the tour guide and interpreter. You probably won’t feel like using language such as “oh no, fall” and “Daddy will clean it up for you” when this happens. But remember, it is at these times where your baby is paying close attention and presents the perfect opportunity for you to take advantage and seize the moment. Have fun and be creative with your method of handling the situation.

Other examples are: Play is watching and helping. Play is riding on dads shoulders or taking horsy back rides. Play is creeping and quietly cruising around. Play is settling down to sleep through sharing a book or experiencing music with a favorite stuffed animal. Once its understood how play affects a babies learning, you and your baby will have many more enjoyable moments while you both learn about how it is the other is learning.
